Biohazards

Biohazards are or contain biological agents that potentially reproduce and spread.

Biohazards include...

  • Microorganisms, including viruses, infectious for man, animals or plants.
  • Infectious proteins, such as prions.
  • Microorganisms containing recombinant DNA or RNA.
  • Transgenic animals.
  • Recombinant DNA or RNA as such.
  • Cells grown in culture.
  • Products derived from the above categories (i.e. excretions of transgenic animals, cell culture supernatants, etc.).
  • Materials that have been in contact with any of the above categories (i.e. blood, organs or cell products from humans or animals).
In contrast, biological toxins, allergens, and other substances that do not reproduce are not classified as biohazards, but as chemical hazards or toxic substances!
